A Need To Know
I remember reading from a book this past year that people who follow you like to know whats going on. Makes sense. In the realm of organization, it helps when everyone knows what’s happening and can participate working together. In the home, it’s good to be on page with what’s going on with your spouse’s schedule and how the kids are doing in school.
But those aren’t things that generate “followers,” they are just necessities to functionality. News and Magazines and Newspapers and Blogs and Twitter generate followers based upon their content of keeping you informed of what you want to know. More people seem to follow the News or blogs or twitter when juicy stories of someone else’s failings are the topic. More people seem to follow these venues when there is a hot topic of debate going on around the issue. Sometimes, it is useful information. Other times the useful is covered up by the “hot and juicy” conflict or gossip.
If it didn’t interest you, you wouldn’t follow and they would be forced to change content or they would be content with the level of dedicated followers. Most likely, the common draw is to continue doing that which created the most followers and become blindsided by one’s own failings of creating less than inspiring content.
Attempt to be conscious this week of what you watch on tv or read or listen to or talk about with co-workers, friends, and life group members that either create the organizational, constructive, inspiring “need to know” or the trickery of the gossiping “need to know.” Either you support one or the other by listening to them or doing the talking yourself. Which is it for you?
