I’ve Had Enough

Ever say “I’ve had enough,” at work, with the spouse, with kids, with a family relationship, with church? Sure, everyone has.  The idea behind this statement is that one’s cup is completely full and they can’t take one more drop in the cup and/or someone better not bump the cup because there’s going to be a mess.  In essence, something needs to stop.

Ministry in church is no different.  Christians seem to be no different eitherChristians stop reading the bible.  We stop going to church.  We stop serving our community.  We stop meeting and gaining advice and encouragement from others.  We stop giving our money to God. We stop living as though we’ve got some good news of Jesus Christ.

In the bible, the word enough often times carries the notion of sufficient. Sufficient seems to say that what is in the cup was just the right amount to accomplish the purpose, the mission, the whole reason there’s something in the cup.  No one ever sings the song “Your Grace is enough…” and think God’s grace is too much and it needs to stop.  And that’s the thing about God.  He knows you.  He knows exactly what you need.  We sometimes add more to our cup than necessary and we sometimes take things out of our cup unnecessarily.  But God never puts in too much.

I believe people stop giving money to the church because they forget how God has graced them sufficiently enough to have what they have and how giving is a response of gratitude and thankfulness and faithfulness, rather than a knee jerk reaction to fix the arising issue (i.e. keeping the lights on, sending money to Haiti, etc.).

I believe people stop serving other people because they forget how God has reached down and shown His love to them personally and how there are so many other people around them whose relationship with God is anything but sufficient.

We have the privilege of working for the guy who owns everything and who hired us and gave us a job.  Lord forbid, we ever say to him “I’ve had enough.” And may one day, God tell us that what we did for Him on earth was sufficient to accomplish the purpose, the mission, the task set before us.
