Most of my young life and even now I hear people tell me that I need to make goals for my life (career, money, family, etc.), 1 yr goals, 2 yr goals, 5 yr goals, 10 yr goals. The truth is that things sometimes change so quickly that what you thought was going to be a great plan doesn’t work out at all. I mean the plan that I thought of for my life career at 16 didn’t happen. The thought I had for my career after graduating Graduate school didn’t happen. The plan we set as leadership team at our church for this year seemed to fall through.
Yet, the opposite would be terrible. The idea of not creating plans and just going with what the wind brings your way is a great idea either. In the religion realm, there is this saying of “Let go and let God,” and this is what I think of when I hear that phrase. But the bible tells us to make plans, set goals, and put our attention on our destination. However, we have to also recognize that “a person plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).
James says it like this: “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into this or that town and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” 14 You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? For you are a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes. 15 You ought to say instead, “If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that” (James 4:13-15). All the more reason to make sure, you don’t forget about God as we go about our business.
