Which One?

A good friend said something to me about liking the New Living Translation a couple of weeks ago.  I admitted that it’s not my favorite version (I like NET and NIV).  The issue for all translations is that they are really interpretations.  Somewhere, the translators have to make a decision on what they believe the passage is saying with that sentence structure with those chosen words and often times words carry different connotations in different contexts.  Our pastor read this verse this past week and while reading it from another version, I saw a difference.  What’s really interesting is that there are quite a few different versions of just this one verse and they seem to be saying similar but different things.  Don’t you agree?

Proverbs 4:26

“New Living Translation”: Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.

“The Message”: Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you.

“King James Version”: Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

“New American Standard”: Watch the path of your feet And all your ways will be established.

“New English Translation”: Make the path for your feet level, so that all your ways may be established.

“New International Version”: Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.

Is there a true difference? [...]
